History: This jacquard wall tapestry, Office of Curiosities, comes from a trompe l'oeil painting by the famous Dutch painter Edward Collier (1640-1708). It is composed of different objects maintained by red strips on a black background. Trompe l'oeil is French for deceive the eye: an art technique that uses realistic imagery to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects exist in three dimensions. Forced perspective is a comparable illusion in architecture.
