French Post-Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin, (1848-1903) was born in Paris and interested in art and going to galleries since childhood.
In 1888 he painted with van Gogh for 9 weeks in Arles - both had bouts of depression. Becoming frustrated with Impressionism Gauguin found Asian and African art to be filled with excitement. At that time in Europe it was vogue to look to other cultural art. In 1891 he sailed to the tropics to escape Europe and it's artificial ways.
