A unicorn is a magical creature well known during Medieval and Renaissance times in myths and legends. Throughout the medieval ages, people (Europeans, in particular) considered the unicorn a religious symbol. The unicorn stood for the virtues of chastity, purity and sanctity.
Unicorn tapestries became one of the most popular tapestry art works produced during the Medieval Ages.
The unicorn was known to be representative of Jesus Christ himself. This acquired symbolism gave the Unicorn a revered place in the Medieval European Society. A famous series of tapestries is The Tapestry Cycle which includes The Lady and the Unicorn (La Dame a la Licorne) and The Hunt of the Unicorn.
